Truckers are essential members of the national workforce in any country. Professional truck drivers are responsible for delivering items to stores and other outlets all across the country. They work for long hours on the road but are rewarded with freedom and an exciting and ever-changing lifestyle. Read the steps below to learn how to become a professional trucker.
Earn a Driver's License
First things first, anyone who wants to become a trucker must already have, or earn, a driver's license for an average car. This because trucking institutes need to make sure that the potential drivers understand the rules of the road and have some experience with driving already, even if the person has never driven a semi-truck or other commercial vehicle.
Earn a Commerical Learner's Permit
The next step is to earn a commercial learner's permit (CDP). The requirements for being able to earn a CDP varies on the state you live in. However, you need to be 21 to drive a commercial truck over state lines, so it's best to be that old before applying for a CDP anyway. During your training to earn a CDP, you will be allowed to practice driving commercial vehicles so you can become more comfortable with them.
Attend a Commerical Driver License Program
Once you have your CLP, it's time to start working on your CDL. These programs work as mini-schools that focus on teaching you how to drive safely. These classes include practice driving the vehicles, along with classroom work. These classes typically take between 3-6 weeks. Once the classes are done, you will be asked to take both written and road tests. If you pass, you will earn your CDL and be ready for someone from a heavy truck recruitment to hire you!
If these steps sound do-able to you, then you might have what it takes to become a professional truck driver. Check out classes in your area and earn your CDL as soon as possible!
